Learning is a core element of Takigahara.
Danish philosopher and creator of folk high schools Grundtvig once said, "We learn for life." This philosophy is an inspiration for what we do - we believe that we can learn every day from the earth, local villagers and ancestors, philosophies around the world, and each other.
Guests can play, explore, and learn with us through projects like Takigahara Nature School and Takigahara Craft Tours, as well as our much-loved ishinoko festival that celebrates music and culture.
Working with local villagers, we explore rural life, organic agriculture, sustainable practices, artisan culture, practical skills, and traditional Japanese art history.
What is our ideal village life? How do we create it? By sharing knowledge, wisdom, and skills, we hope to create the kind of community we want to live in.
Stone Quarry Guided Tour
Join a local guide to explore key sites related to Takigahara’s rich stone culture and learn about their history and significance. You’ll have special access to a stone quarry where hand-quarrying was done using pickaxes from the Meiji era to the early Showa period. The sheer scale of the quarry is truly breathtaking.

Lacquerware Wood Turning Experience
Lacquerware is one of Japan’s most renowned traditional crafts. The combination of lathe processing and Echizen-style craftsmanship originated in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture. In this experience, you will learn how to design, carve, and shape a wooden bowl under the guidance of skilled local artisans.

- After shaping, the artisan will apply lacquer and finish the piece, and it will be shipped at a later date (domestic shipping only).
- Please note that it may take approximately one month for shipping (shipping fees are separate).
- For safety reasons, children under 10 years old cannot participate.
Aroma Stone
Create your own original aroma stone by crushing Takigahara stone with a hammer. Blend natural essential oils with your favorite fragrance to capture the essence and memories of Takigahara in a bottle to take home.

Bamboo Crafts
Experience making a 'Shikainami Basket'—a flexible yet durable bamboo craft. Harnessing the natural beauty of bamboo, this workshop lets you create your own "Shikainami Basket", a finely crafted storage piece inspired by the waves of the four seas. As you use it, you'll grow even more attached to this unique, handcrafted item made just for you.

Takigahara Chickens Tour

Mt.Kurakake is a must-visit hiking spot in Takigahara, offering stunning natural scenery and breathtaking views. With trails suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers, you can enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons throughout the year.

Rental Cycling
Enjoy a relaxing cycling tour while immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Takigahara. It takes about 10 minutes to reach the Kurakake-yama trailhead and around 30 minutes to visit nearby hot spring towns. Experience the changing seasons and the refreshing breeze as you ride.
